Due to the COVID issues this year the annual Ziegler family 5K was cancelled in June. However, the family felt that there was some way they could still hold an event and decided to host a Covid Cornhole tournament instead. The event was held at Pine Grove Park and was a smashing success that led to a $2500 donation to the Staples All Veterans and Community Park. The park board is very thankful to the Ziegler family for this generous donation.
The family has been actively donating to the park since 2016 after veteran Jeff Ziegler passed away unexpectedly and held their first 5K race that year. Daughter Jenna Jobe wanted to honor him the best way she could while hosting a community event to get people together to give back to something important.
Jeff was in the Airborne until the 90s and was very patriotic. He loved that our veterans park was growing and he would talk about how great it would be to have certain monuments etc. This made the decision to focus our fundraising on the veterans park a no brainer.
Not long after he passed, his father Richard Ziegler passed away. He too was a proud veteran. We added his memory to our event as well to honor them both.
Since then the family has donated $8000 to the park and has plans to hold an expanded event next August. Watch for the date to be announced next Spring. The results of this year’s tournament were:
First place: Leo Carlson and Denny Trana
Second place: Jamie & Jessie Nichols
Third place: Greg & Zach Ziegler
Raffle winners Al Ness and Barb Dvorak donated their winnings back to the park.
